Membership
renewals are due in advance and are payable in December of the year preceding the membership year. Late renewals incur a late fee.
The relevant forms (see below) must be submitted with payment. Forms can be scanned and emailed or posted.
ASIA prefers renewal via an internet banking transfer or deposit into our account. Please use your full name as reference.

Clinical members
are those practitioners who have completed all requirements for
Clinical Membership and have undergone an accreditation process
with ASIA.
Requirements
for Clinical Membership
(a) Applicants for Full Membership of ASIA must have undergone training in Somatic Psychotherapy or Somatic Counselling or other related therapy training which involves bodywork in combination with verbal therapy.
(b) Training in somatic psychotherapy is to be not less than 500 hours teaching over a minimum period of 3 years.
(c) Applicants must have undertaken a minimum of 120 hours individual psychotherapy.
(d) Applicants must have completed a minimum of 750 hours of supervised practice over a minimum of 2 years completed post training
(e) Applicants must have completed a minimum of 125 hours of supervision which includes at least 75 hours completed post training
(f) The structure of the training must be a graduated sequence of complexity rather than an accumulation of workshops.
(g) Applicants must undertake to complete the required professional development of a minimum of 24 hours over 2 years and the required supervision of a minimum of 20 hours over 2 years to update their qualification
(h) Applicants must have a genuine interest in and affiliation with Somatic Psychotherapy
(i) Applicants subject to previous disciplinary measures or dismissal by another professional association must provide details.
(j) Applicants must read and agree to abide by the Association's Guidelines for Ethical Code of Practice and sign, signifying agreement.
(k) Applicants must complete the accreditation process for Clinical Members.
(l) Applicants must agree to provide a yearly statement in a format acceptable by the association showing compliance to these rules of membership
Applicants will need to provide documentation of their training,
supervision and therapy, attend an interview and will be required
to provide a case study and details of the theoretical orientation
of their work. Each case will be taken on its individual merits.
Process
of application for Clinical Membership
- Read the ASIA Guidelines for Ethical Code of Practice and complete the ethics agreement form.
- Complete the member details form.
- Write a letter of application and include your reasons for deciding to become a Clinical member.
- Pay your application fee of $100.00 by internet transfer (preferred) or send a cheque
- Scan and email (or post) your application including:
- a completed Member Details
form
- a completed Ethics Agreement form
- your letter of application
- a current CV (including relevant history ie work, education, therapy, supervision)
- copies of your qualifications (incl academic transcripts, certificates, letter from therapist and supervisor)
- your case study (see below)
- A member of the executive will contact you to organise an formal interview with the accreditation panel
- The formal interview will be held
- The interview panel will report their findings to the executive committee
- The executive committee will decide on your suitability to become a member
- You will be notified of the outcome of your application
- If unsuccessful the panel will arrange a meeting to inform you of the decision and will do all they can to assist with suggestions regarding further training, reading, therapy and/or supervision considered necessary and encourage you to apply again.
- If successful you will need to pay your annual membership fee within 30 days of notification and if you chose to be listed on the PACFA/ARCAP register then the one-off fee ($99.00) will also need to be paid.
NOTES:
- if posting your application you must send 4 copies of your complete application including supporting documents
- the interview panel will not include ASIA members who have acted as a therapist or supervisor to you or members who have an ongoing personal relationship to you
- the interview may be recorded and the recording remains the property of ASIA
- The Case Study: the purpose of your case study is to illustrate your somatic and psychodynamic understanding and application when working with clients. It is to be based on your work with a ‘longer term’ client (more than 6 months) and has taken place within the last 5 years. Within this study please include:
- Discussion of your contract with your client.
- Your psychodynamic understanding and formulation that shows your informing theories e.g. somatic, intersubjective, attachment, object relational, self psychological etc From this we want to see how you think about your clients and what influences how you work with that client.
- Describe how you worked within the relationship including considerations regarding transference dynamics.
- Describe how any bodywork and verbal work were used e.g. were they integrated, did body-oriented interventions arise out of the flow and contract of the therapy?
- Any ethical considerations involved in your work with this client.
- The case study should be between 2000 - 2500 words and include references.

Provisional Members
are those practitioners who have completed the minimum number of
training hours and are working towards Full membership, and are eligible for listing on the PACFA register.
Requirements
for Provisional Membership
(a) Applicants for Provisional Membership of A.S.I.A. must have undergone training in Somatic Psychotherapy or Somatic Counselling or other related therapy training which involves bodywork in combination with verbal therapy.
(b) Training in somatic psychotherapy is to be not less than 500 hours teaching over a minimum period of three years.
(c) Applicants must have undertaken a minimum of 100 hours individual psychotherapy.
(d) Applicants must have completed a minimum of 200 hours of supervised practice.
(e) Applicants must have completed a minimum of 50 hours of supervision
(f) Applicants must remain in, at minimum, fortnightly supervision following the initial 50 hours until clinical accreditation obtained
(g) The structure of the training must be a graduated sequence of complexity rather than an accumulation of workshops.
(h) Applicants must undertake to complete the required professional development of a minimum of 24 hours over 2 years to update their qualification.
(i) Applicants must have a genuine interest in and affiliation with Somatic Psychotherapy
(j) Applicants subject to previous disciplinary measures or dismissal by another professional association must provide details.
(k) Applicants must read and agree to abide by the Association's Guidelines for Ethical Code of Practice and sign, signifying agreement.
(l) Applicants must complete the accreditation process for Provisional Members.
(m) Applicants must agree to provide a yearly statement in a format acceptable by the association showing compliance to these rules of membership

Associate Members
are those practitioners who have completed the minimum number of
training hours and are working towards Full membership.
Requirements
for Associate Membership
(a) Applicants for Associate Membership of A.S.I.A. must have undergone a training of not less than 360 hours over a minimum period of 2 years in Somatic Psychotherapy or Somatic Counselling or other related therapy training which involves bodywork in combination with verbal therapy.
(b) Applicants must have undertaken no less than 50 hours of personal therapy.
(c) Applicants must undertake to complete the required professional development of a minimum of 24 hours over 2 years to update their qualification.
(d) Applicants agree to obtain indemnity insurance and participate in, at minimum, fortnightly supervision when working with clients.
(e) Applicants must:
i) actively work towards becoming a full member of the association
ii) have an intention of working as a somatic counsellor or psychotherapist
iii) have a genuine interest in and affiliation with Somatic Psychotherapy
iv) recognise that associate membership may not be used in advertising or be claimed as a qualification
v) recognise that the applicant may be exempt from (e)(iv) where the applicant meets the following:
- Completed training in somatic psychotherapy of not less than 500 hours teaching over a minimum period of three years.
- Remains in weekly supervision with a Somatic Psychotherapist for the duration
(f) Applicants subject to previous disciplinary measures or dismissal by another professional association must provide details.
(g) Applicants must read and agree to abide by the Association's Guidelines for Ethical Code of Practice, and sign, signifying agreement.
(h) Applicants must complete the assessment process for Associate Members.
(i) Applicants must agree to provide a yearly statement in a format acceptable by the association showing compliance to these rules of membership

Any person, including students undergoing training in Somatic Psychotherapy
or Somatic Counselling or other related therapy training which involves
body work in combination with verbal therapy, can apply to be an Affiliate member of ASIA
Process
for application for Affiliate Membership
- Pay the Affiliate Membership fee by internet transfer (preferred) or send a cheque
- Scan and email (or post) a completed member details form
- You will be notified once your Affiliate Membership has been processed
